Physical Tourism Meets Digital Experience

A tourism operator managing five heritage and adventure sites wanted to offer immersive VR previews to visitors — letting them "experience" attractions before choosing their tour. But existing VR kiosk solutions were expensive, fragile, single-user, and couldn't be updated remotely. Their content team needed to push new environments to all sites simultaneously without technical staff present.

The core challenge: build a system that any visitor could activate with their smartphone QR code, share with a group in real-time, run across five locations on shared infrastructure, and support central content management — all with sub-100ms latency on consumer hardware.

Edge-Cached WebXR with Real-Time Multi-User Sync

We built a WebXR-based VR delivery system — no app download required. Visitors scan a QR code, their browser loads the VR environment via edge CDN (Cloudflare), and they're inside the experience within 3 seconds. A synchronisation server enables group sessions where up to 12 users share the same virtual space simultaneously.

QR-triggered instant WebXR launch — zero app install, works on any modern smartphone
Cloudflare edge CDN — 3D assets cached within 50ms of each tourist location
WebSocket-based multi-user sync — up to 12 concurrent users in a shared virtual space
Headset & phone support — works on Oculus/Meta Quest, iPhones, and Android phones
CMS for content team — push new environments to all 5 locations without technical support
Offline fallback — last-cached environments remain accessible without network connectivity

Technology Stack

Built on Three.js and WebXR APIs for the client-side experience, with a Node.js synchronisation server handling real-time session state. All 3D assets (GLTF/GLB) are pre-optimised, compressed, and served via edge nodes co-located near each tourist site for minimum latency.

Immersive Experiences, Measurable Impact

After deploying across all 5 tourism sites, visitor engagement time increased by 40%. The QR-to-immersive-experience flow under 3 seconds meant zero friction for tourists. The content team can now push updated virtual environments to all sites simultaneously from a single dashboard — something that previously required on-site technical visits.

The system now handles peak tourist season traffic — 50+ concurrent VR sessions per location — without performance degradation, running on standard consumer smartphones without dedicated hardware.

XtrazCon built something we didn't think was possible — a VR experience that works on any phone, launches in seconds, and lets groups explore together. Our visitors are spending 40% longer at sites and consistently mention the VR experience as a highlight.
